Jérusalem 1900 : la ville sainte à l'âge des possibles, avec Vincent Lemire

Life there moved slowly, bound by tradition and at the pace of the camel." Yet, like the rest of the Ottoman Empire, it was undergoing a modernization movement. In Jerusalem, multi-faith political institutions ensured the development of public infrastructure: a hospital, a pharmacy, and even a train station since 1892. Far from being a city eternally fragmented since the Crusades, Jerusalem is home to an urban community whose categories are fluid, shifting, and complex. The Holy City around 1900 was characterized by balance and conflict, but not necessarily along the lines of current divisions. How did the different religious, cultural, and national communities coexist and administer public life together? What was the impact of the Young Turk Revolution on the Holy City? How were the beginnings of Zionist ideology received by city dwellers? Why did Palestinian nationalism emerge in opposition to Ottomanism? Speaking to Storiavoce, historian Vincent Lemire unveils a renewed history of Jerusalem without fatalism, at a time when everything was still possible. Guest: A historian specializing in Jerusalem and a professor at the University of Paris-Est Gustave-Eiffel, Vincent Lemire works to disseminate the history of the Holy City through the publication of a graphic novel, "Histoire de Jérusalem" (Les Arènes, 256 pages, €27) and through the European project "Open Jerusalem," which shares his municipal archives with open access. He wrote "Jerusalem 1900. The Holy City in the Age of Possibilities" (Dunod paperback, 336 pages, €9.90). *** Facebook:   / histoireetcivilisationsmag   Instagram:   / histoireetcivilisations   Twitter:   / storiavoce
