Manpupunyor, the Holy Land of the Urals - July 20, 8:50 PM Russia is home to the Trans-Siberian Railway, famous as the longest railway in the world. Connecting Vladivostok and Moscow, the total length of this railway alone amounts to one-quarter of the Earth's circumference. However, there is another train here that is not well known to us. It is a trans-siberian train that starts in Moscow and connects to Vorkuta, the northernmost point of the Ural Mountains. It is the "Northern Train," also known as the "Polar Express." Our journey this time involves taking the Northern Train, passing through the Komi Republic in northwestern Russia, and heading north toward the tundra and the Ural Mountains. In the middle lies Manpupunyor, known as the sacred site of the Ural Mountains. The journey begins in Yaroslavl, a thousand-year-old ancient city of Russia. To reach Manpupunyor, an auspicious pillar towering atop the peaks of the Ural Mountains, one must pass through Yeremeevo, a remote village in the Ural Mountains. It takes a four-hour boat ride from the Ilych River dock to Yeremeevo. From there, one must take another boat along the river for six hours, followed by a full day of walking through the vast Taiga to finally reach Manpupunyor. In particular, traversing the Taiga, a massive coniferous forest, requires battling not only capricious weather, swamps, and wild animals, but also mosquitoes. Having finally arrived at Manpupunyor after countless hardships. However, Manpupunyor, shrouded in thick fog, is not easily visible. Will we ever be able to see its true face? We step into that black mist. Part 2. The Edge of the Urals, Yeremejevo - July 21, 8:50 PM Manpupunyor, the seven mysteries rising atop the peaks of the Ural Mountains. Since ancient times, Manpupunyor has been a place steeped in numerous legends due to its bizarre shape. However, due to the ever-changing weather, there are not many days when we can see its true face. We arrived with difficulty, but Manpupunyor remains hidden within the thick fog, refusing to easily reveal itself to us. It is said that clear days arrive only about one in ten at best. Praying that tomorrow we will see a clear sky and the vivid image of Manpupunyor, we spend the night in the mountain lodge amidst the fog. Descending the mountain to return to our journey north, we headed back to Yeremeevo. Nestled on the banks of the Ilych River, Yeremeevo is a small, clean village filled with the fresh scent of grass. Although hundreds of years have passed since its establishment, this village has maintained its unchanging appearance and still lacks hospitals or mobile phones. However, the villagers possess a precious treasure that cannot be replaced by anything else: the river flowing in front of the village and the forest that surrounds it. The river and the forest are indispensable and precious livelihoods for them. Most villagers make a living through fishing and hunting. Uncle Slavi is one of them. A skilled hunter, Uncle Slavi is a handyman with exceptional manual dexterity who takes on various tasks in the village. In particular, he says his hobby is building boats. His closest friend is Daniel, a 13-year-old boy. Touring the village with the two of them, we catch a glimpse of the quiet yet warm lives of the people of Yeremeevo. Part 3. The Heart of Komi, Syktyvkar - July 22, 8:50 PM The Komi Republic, located in northwestern Russia, is a country where over 70% of its territory is covered in forests. The Komi Republic is a place where pristine, unspoiled nature thrives. In particular, Komi's vast primeval forests, untouched by human hands, have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our journey continues in Syktyvkar, the capital of the Komi Republic. Every year on June 12, various festivals are held across Russia to celebrate "Russia Day." "Russia Day" is a national holiday commemorating the collapse of the Soviet Union and the establishment of modern Russia. Although Syktyvkar, the capital of the Komi Republic, is a small city with a population of approximately 240,000, it also hosts spectacular festivals to celebrate "Russia Day." From people taking to the streets to enjoy the festivities to performances themed around inter-ethnic harmony, the celebrations are truly vibrant. The scene in Syktyvkar, celebrating the holiday, is boisterous and colorful. While some people are enjoying themselves boisterously, others are simply enjoying a warm time in humble ways. Cutting grass to feed the livestock, milking cows to prepare food—for them, such daily life is always a small festival and a source of happiness. After spending time with friendly people, we head north again. Vorkuta, the northernmost city of the Komi Republic.
