TRIBUNJAKARTA.COM - The Mayor of Chacao, Gustavo Duque, reported on Wednesday evening that at least four buildings collapsed due to a strong earthquake that struck Caracas and other areas of Venezuela. Meanwhile, six other buildings suffered significant damage and are still being assessed. Chacao is a city in the Caracas region, the capital of Venezuela. Dozens of buildings are estimated to have collapsed in Caracas due to the earthquake that struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening (June 23, 2026). The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that Venezuela was struck by two earthquakes. The first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1, with its epicenter west of the community of Morón, located along the country's Caribbean coast, about 168 kilometers west of Caracas. One minute later, the USGS reported an even larger earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5. Rescue 18 from rubble The powerful earthquake caused several buildings to collapse, particularly in the capital, Caracas. Damage was also reported at Caracas' Simón Bolívar International Airport, where flights were suspended. Several people were reportedly trapped under the rubble, although the number of casualties and deaths was not immediately clear. Gustavo Duque stated that more than 500 personnel were involved in the search and rescue of earthquake victims in Los Palos Grandes, Altamira, and Bello Campo, the worst-hit areas. The mayor said rescuers managed to pull 18 people alive from the collapsed buildings. According to witnesses at the scene, rescuers, police officers, and search dog units worked throughout the night to find people who might still be trapped under the rubble. A report indicates that at least five people, including a 16-year-old girl, are missing as search operations continue. In addition to Altamira and Los Palos Grandes, damage was also reported in San Bernardino, where several buildings reportedly sustained significant damage from the earthquake.
