Fakarava Atoll - Part 6: Scuba Diving Marbled Grouper Spawn French Polynesia Tumakohua Pass

A compilation of footage taken during our first dive, second morning in the Tumakohua or "South" Pass located on the Fakarava Atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago. Our first dive of the day was at daybreak during the end of the marbled grouper spawning event. We're not sure why but the fish spawned on a second night and we were very lucky to witness it again on the same trip. Shot with GoPro Hero 10 at 4K/60fps and (2) Backscatter Macro Wide 4300 video lights. No red filter. The underwater footage has minor color correction. The speed of certain clips has been slightly altered for dramatic effect. When we learned about the marbled grouper spawning event from watching Blue Planet we knew we needed to try and see it for ourselves. We had no idea if that was even possible but it turns out that with a little research, ingenuity and luck anything is possible. Fakarava was by far the most beautiful diving I’ve ever done. The crystal blue waters of the north are a color that cannot be described or replicated on film. I think I captured it as best I could with the humble equipment I had available but there’s really no comparison. The marine life was always present, grey reef sharks were our companions on every dive we did in the six days of diving we were so fortunate to participate in. Words cannot express the experience. The Wall of Sharks in both the North and South passes is surely one of the greatest marvels in the nature world. Our trip was arranged by Bluewater Travel. We stayed at Haiviki Lodge in the North and at the incredibly beautiful Motu Aito Paradise in the South. I cannot recommend both places enough. Music by Kanaan, Alber Jupiter, *shels and Temple Fang.
