Gilbert & Sullivan Austin 2019 Grand Production of Iolanthe or, The Peer and the Peri Written by W.S. Gilbert & Composed by Arthur Sullivan Stage Director and Choreographer - Ralph MacPhail, Jr. Music Director and Conductor - Jeffrey Jones-Ragona First performed in 1882, “Iolanthe” is the seventh of fourteen operatic collaborations by Gilbert and Sullivan. It is universally regarded as one of Sir Arthur Sullivan’s most beautiful scores - a high water mark in terms of music, wit, cleverness, and color – with incredible choruses, wonderful solos and orchestration beyond compare. Peers, British noblemen and honorable members of Parliament encounter Peris, lovelorn fairies from a golden glen – a collision of powerful mortals with feet of clay and immortal beings wielding magic wands. The result - havoc is wreaked in the House of Lords! ACT I ♫ ____________________________________________________ Tripping hither, tripping thither Iolanthe! From thy dark exile thou art summoned! Good morrow, good mother Fare thee well, attractive stranger Good morrow, good lover None shall part us from each other Loudly let the trumpet bray! Tantantara! The law is the true embodiment My well-loved Lord and Guardian dear Nay, tempt me not Spurn not the nobly born My Lords, it may not be When I went to the bar When darkly looms the day (Finale of Act I) ACT II ♫ ____________________________________________________ When all night long Strephen's a member of Parliament When Britain really ruled the waves In vain to us you plead Oh, foolish fay Though p'haps I may incur your blame Love, Unrequited robs me of my rest If you go in you're sure to win If we've weak enough to tarry My Lord, a suppliant oft your feet If may not be-for so the fates decide! Soon as we may, all and away! (Finale of Act II)
