Founded back in the 16th century, it has preserved almost 500 years of history in a historic center that very few cities in Brazil have managed to keep, earning it the nickname "Atenas Alagoana," an unlikely hub of culture and knowledge in the heart of the backcountry. In this episode, I disembark from the sailboat Balanço and explore this stone city on foot: baroque churches gilded with gold, an imperial theater, the marks left by the Dutch under Maurício de Nassau, and the stories of those who live here today. More than a tour, Penedo became a reflection. Everything at the mouth of the São Francisco River is changeable and unstable; yet the rock that supports the city is the opposite: permanence, foundation, certainty.
