Markel was shot by Luis Rivera's childhood friend Sigfredo Garcia on July 14, 2018 in Markel's garage. Rivera had helped Garcia get a weapon and drive up to Tallahassee twice to murder Dan Markel. Rivera was represented by Chuck and David Collins and made the decision to make a deal with prosecutors instead of facing trial. He was sentenced to a total of 19 years in prison for unrelated federal charges and the Markel murder. Rivera is expected to be released in 2035. Garcia was sentenced to life in prison. Markel's ex brother-in-law Charlie Adelson was convicted in fall 2023, and his ex mother-in-law Donna Adelson was convicted of murder, conspiracy, and solicitation to commit murder in September 2025.
