Essentially, a clause has a subject and a verb or predicate. Clauses may be independent or dependent. • An independent clause can stand alone as a complete sentence. Example: The woman laughed. • A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a complete sentence and depends on an independent clause. Example: When she laughed. Types of Dependent Clauses: • A noun clause acts as a noun. Example: What he said surprised me. ("What he said" is a noun clause.) • An adjective/relative clause modifies a noun or pronoun.
