On May 5th, Devlet Bahçeli, leader of the ruling coalition partner MHP, put forward a new proposal regarding the discussions surrounding Abdullah Öcalan's status in the peace process. Indicating that "political and legal arrangements" are next in line in the process, Bahçeli stated: "If there is a status gap for Abdullah Öcalan, this gap should be addressed in a way that serves the process of a Turkey free from terrorism. I propose that this be called the peace process and the coordination of politicization. Our goal is for the founding leadership of the PKK to serve under this definition. It is not possible to conduct the process healthily by ignoring this issue." These words were described by some in the media as "a breath of fresh air for the stalled process," the DEM Party welcomed the proposal, and the CHP also supported it. Will all this convince the "skeptical and dissatisfied undercurrent" within a segment of the Kurdish base? Where are the nationalist Kurds going wrong?
