A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (Luke 1:57-66, 80) In those days, the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she had a son. When her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her such great mercy, they rejoiced with her. On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they wanted to name him Zechariah after his father, but his mother objected, saying, “No, he will be called John.” They said to her, “But none of your relatives has that name.” Then they made signs to his father, asking what he wanted to name the child. He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they were all amazed. Immediately his tongue was loosed, and he began to speak, praising God. Awe came upon the neighbors, and throughout the hill country of Judea all this was talked about. All who heard about it wondered in amazement, “What will become of this child?” They said this because the hand of God was truly with him. The child grew physically and his spirit became strong, and he lived in the desert until the day he appeared publicly to the people of Israel.
