Alleskönner Landtierärzte: Mit dem Helikopter zum Kuhstall | Ostseereport | NDR Doku

Three hours there, three hours back – a 600-kilometer drive to treat a sheep. Calls like these are part of everyday life for veterinarian Jeremias Wedin and his team. Every animal counts; distance is no object. Veterinarians across northern Sweden travel vast distances. You can watch this and other documentaries in the ARD Mediathek: https://www.ardmediathek.de/dokus Jeremias Wedin's home base is the veterinary clinic in Bygdeå, Sweden, north of Umeå, a coastal city in northern Sweden. He primarily treats small animals and domestic animals. To treat horses, cows, sheep, or even llamas and alpacas, Jeremias has to drive his red station wagon out to the clinic. Every morning at 9:00 a.m., he receives the day's schedule. Each day is different. May is peak season for births, which often means unplanned call-outs, frequently far from the clinic. To minimize travel times and ensure proper care for animals in remote locations, the Swedish Veterinary Association successfully piloted helicopter rescue services in northern Sweden near Östersund last year. This year, they plan to expand this aerial assistance service to Umeå, making it a permanent offering. For Jeremias, this is a new challenge he's eagerly anticipating, as the 39-year-old became a veterinarian because he wanted to be like his childhood TV hero: a helper for all animals, big and small. Unlike in Germany, rural Sweden has fewer specialists and more general practitioners. In a country with such vast distances as Sweden, a veterinarian must be able to treat almost anything. And even in complex emergencies, they must be able to find a solution on-site. This is what fascinates Jeremias Wedin about his job. And when he gets to fly out on missions, it makes his dream job truly perfect. The "Baltic Sea Report" is traveling with a large team of veterinarians in northern Sweden for this report.
