Teachings on Sūtra | “Sunlight on Wisdom” with His Eminence Khöndung Avikrita Vajra Sakya Rinpoche
84000 expresses our sincere gratitude to His Eminence Khöndung Avikrita Vajra Sakya Rinpoche, a leading figure in the Sakya tradition of Buddhism, for sharing profound teachings on the transcendent perfection of wisdom during this sacred month of Saga Dawa. We are also grateful to 84000 associate translator Dr. Catherine Dalton for hosting this installment of our Teachings on Sūtra series. Rinpoche’s talk, “Sunlight on Wisdom,” emphasized the importance of integrating wisdom and compassion when practicing the bodhisattva’s path to spiritual awakening. In keeping with 84000’s 2025 Saga Dawa theme, “The Power of Wisdom,” Rinpoche offered a commentary on a condensed Perfection of Wisdom sūtra, The Sūryagarbha Perfection of Wisdom (Toh 26). Rinpoche provided clear explanations and insight on the sūtra, focusing on the Buddha’s instructions for developing bodhicitta and practicing the transcendent six perfections as essential to achieving Buddhahood. He reminded us of the importance of integrating Dharma teachings with personal experience through practice. Rinpoche highlighted passages in which the Buddha describes how bodhisattvas should train themselves in the transcendent perfection of wisdom. In these passages, the Buddha conveys the seven aspects of meditative stability, described as the sun skilled in means. Highlights: [04:11] Teaching begins. [04:35] The meaning of Perfection of wisdom–the wisdom that has gone beyond. [06:19] Beginning of discussion of the text. [12:43] The context of our practice begins with the Four Noble Truths. [28:42] Rinpoche recites passage from the sūtra, describing the first aspect of a bodhisattva’s practice in meditative stability: “First, just as the sun ripens a sprout, the Bodhisattva's sun-like, meditative stability ripens the sprout of awakening in sentient beings.” [1.4] [34:04] The importance of generating bodhicitta. [39:05] Practicing the six perfections with transcendence. “The transcendent perfection of generosity is not just about giving different material objects, but it’s also giving kind words, giving fearlessness, and highest of all, the gift of Dharma.” [40:16] Sponsoring 84000 is a way to give the Dharma, which produces enormous merit.” [41:56] The Buddha taught that to qualify as a transcendent perfection, the action must be done with the knowledge that there is emptiness in all aspects of the three-fold sphere: the one who does the action, the action itself, and the object of the action. [44:20] The bodhisattva’s second level: the path of cultivation, achieved through the transcendent perfection of ethics. [46:01] The transcendent perfection of patience. [46:50] The transcendent perfections of joyful vigor and meditation. [48:12] The transcendent perfection of wisdom [50:47] Recites and explains the second passage from the sūtra:“Second, just as the sun never diminishes or dissipates, the compassion of the bodhisattva’s meditative stability acts equally for all sentient beings.” [1.4] [56:09] Recites and explains the third passage from the sūtra: “Third, just as the sun burns dust, the bodhisattva’s wisdom of insight burns the dust of the defilements.” [58:11] Recites and explains the fourth passage from the sūtra: “Fourth, just as the sun melts ice, the bodhisattva’s meditative stability, the antidote endowed with gnosis, melts the ice-like defilements. [1.4] [01:00:06] Recites fifth passage from the sūtra: “Fifth, just as the sun dispels darkness, the bodhisattva’s discriminating gnosis dispels the darkness of grasped objects and grasping subjects.” [01:01:58] Recites sixth passage from the sūtra: “Sixth, just as the sun revolves around the four continents, the bodhisattva’s perfect activity liberates from the four torrents of suffering.” [01:03:58] Recites seventh passage from the sūtra: “Seventh, just as the sun warms everything equally, the means that is the bodhisattva’s perfect conduct, which gladdens all sentient beings, is like that act of warming.” [01:09:19] Rinpoche offers some reflections for Saga Dawa. He notes that supporting 84000 translations will create unbelievable merit and make a huge contribution to Buddhism. [01:10:26] Dr. Catherine Dalton offers closing remarks, and expresses our gratitude to Rinpoche for being here today to share these teachings during the sacred month of Saga Dawa.
