The fires continue unabated this summer, having burned over 120,000 hectares in Spain, triple the amount burned at this time last year, and witnessing one of the deadliest wildfires in the country's history. Currently, the most concerning fires are in the Community of Madrid and the province of Ávila, where more than 11,500 people have been evacuated. This situation led the government to declare a national emergency on Thursday night. La Moncloa (the Prime Minister's office) issued a statement to the media explaining that this decision was made due to "the confluence of these fires, along with particularly adverse weather conditions," which hampered firefighting efforts last night.
