Curon Venosta's 14th-century bell tower still stands alone in the middle of Lake Reschen — one of the most photographed spots in the Alps. In France, the people of Tignes fought the dam in court for years before gendarmes forced them out. In Romania, Geamana wasn't drowned in water — it was drowned in toxic mining waste, its church spire still leaning out of a lake that shifts between rust red and sulphur yellow. And in Wales, the flooding of Capel Celyn — a Welsh-speaking community — without a single Welsh MP voting for it, triggered a wave of Welsh nationalism that echoes to this day.
