This week, my guest is architect Luis Azcunaga, director of Azcunaga Proyectos, a firm that integrates design, construction, and real estate development. Luis comes from a family with a strong entrepreneurial spirit (his grandfather founded the first supermarket in northern Mexico), and from a young age, he showed a keen business sense, going from operating vending machines in college to managing real estate developments. I spoke with Luis about how he managed to launch his first commercial development without his own capital, convincing the owner of an abandoned property to contribute it to the project. We discussed why architects need to move beyond a "romantic" view of the profession and understand the numbers and realities of the market, and how the birth of his daughter was the driving force that propelled him to take more aggressive risks, guided by the philosophy that "the burden makes the donkey move."
