For a long time, however, it seemed as if the series was undergoing a gradual evolution from 2D to 3D, completely abandoning its old game concept. This changed with the release of New Super Mario Bros. in 2006 and Super Mario Galaxy in 2007, two completely different titles that demonstrated that 2D games are by no means outdated and can coexist alongside 3D games without replacing them. While Super Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros. were still mechanically very different, Nintendo increasingly harmonized the two concepts, ultimately resulting in Super Mario 3D Land, released for the Nintendo 3DS in November 2011. The hybrid concept was well received, and so a motivated team at Nintendo, in cooperation with 1-Up Studio, immediately began developing a sequel, Super Mario 3D World, which was to be released for the newly released Wii U home console. To appeal to fans of the New Super Mario Bros. series, unlike Super Mario 3D Land, cooperative multiplayer was implemented, allowing up to four players at once. Producer Koizumi's team decided to make Peach and Rosalina playable alongside Mario, Luigi, and Toad, and to give them individual abilities to increase the competitive aspect of the cooperative gameplay and allow players to select characters according to their play style. In addition, the Star Coins have been replaced with Green Stars, three of which can be found in each level. The new Cat Bell acts as a kind of mascot for the game, allowing Mario and his friends to climb walls and perform cat jumps. Although the game is the second-best-selling game on the Wii U with 5.86 million sales, the game was denied its major success due to the weak console. So, it seemed almost inevitable that Nintendo would finally announce a port called Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury at its Nintendo Direct for the 35th anniversary of Super Mario in September 2020. The port was released on February 12, 2021. Unlike other Wii U ports, there are some changes compared to the original. For example, the player's movement speed has been increased, the Toad mini-games have been made available for multiplayer, and the stamps for the brand-new Photo Mode have been used as decorations. In addition to the cooperative mode, an online multiplayer mode and Amiibo functionality were added. The biggest innovation, however, is the new open game world in the Bowser's Fury add-on, the Cuddly Cat Lake, in which Mario must navigate the world with Bowser Jr.'s help and collect so-called cat insignias with which he can defeat the giant, furious Bowser. This means that elements from the 3D titles, which were previously rather sparsely featured in the spin-off, are now an integral part of the game, further reinforcing its status as a hybrid product.
