In the early 2000s, Dubai was a city of ambition that had reached the physical limits of its growth. The main problem was its limited coastline, which was only eighty kilometers long. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum initiated an unprecedented engineering project, deciding not to expand the existing territory but to create a new landmass right in the Persian Gulf. Thus began the story of Palm Jumeirah—an artificial island whose shape was chosen not only for aesthetics but also to maximize the length of its beaches. Its construction required the participation of top specialists from Holland, a country with centuries of experience in managing the elements. Sand reclamation technology from the seabed became the basis for the project, although desert sand was deemed unsuitable due to its lightness and fine grain. To ensure the perfect contours of the palm fronds, engineers used a private satellite navigation system with an accuracy of just one centimeter. Ninety-four million cubic meters of sea sand were transformed into a man-made archipelago under strict control from space. However, the realization of this dream faced severe challenges. The 2008 financial crisis and falling oil prices threatened the existence of such megaprojects, turning neighboring archipelagos into "ghost islands." Palm Jumeirah remains the only fully completed structure in the grand plan that included Palm Jebel Ali and The World. The twelve-billion-dollar project became home to fifteen thousand people and the site of the legendary Atlantis Hotel, whose opening stunned the world with its scale. Today, experts and environmentalists continue to debate the longevity of this structure. Artificial reefs and sunken planes have helped partially restore the marine ecosystem, but the question of erosion and soil stability remains unresolved. The ocean is gradually reclaiming its territory, requiring constant coastal stabilization.
