The KGB was also famous for its ruthless methods and for operating in secrecy. Many citizens lived in fear of being monitored, with its informants embedded in every aspect of Soviet life. The legacy of the KGB continues to affect Russia today, as many former KGB officers, including Vladimir Putin, who served as an agent in East Germany, have taken prominent roles in government.
