The main purpose of the Jagannath Rath Yatra is to take Lord Jagannath to his aunt's house. This yatra is taken out every year on the second day of the month of Ashadh. On this day Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra come out of the temple and stay in the Sri Gundicha temple for seven days. According to legend, when Lord Krishna went to Dwarka, he promised Radha and the people of Vraj that he would come to meet them once every year. This Rath Yatra is believed to be associated with this sentiment, in which Lord Jagannath comes among his devotees.
