Nolan’s Odyssey Has Nothing on These Old-School Epics

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is now in theaters and receiving largely ecstatic reviews. Critics have called it "a staggering achievement," and fair enough: the film was built around an enormous IMAX shoot and a real commitment to capturing as much as possible in camera rather than leaning on CGI. But call me an old man for saying this: for all its scale, the world it builds can feel too polished, too glossy, more museum piece than lived-in ancient world. So I went back to seven old-school productions drawn from ancient myth and the sword-and-sandal tradition.
