In this issue, we'll explore the real roles women played in Medieval Europe. They worked in the fields, brewed ale, washed clothes, managed craft workshops, traded in markets, conducted legal battles, protected property, managed dower, and managed castles while men went to war or court. We'll discuss daughters, valued as future laborers, marriage and the right to consent, midwives and childbirth, women's guilds, brewsters, widows, monasteries, city courts, market crimes, defending city walls, and old age, which was formalized almost like a business contract. This is a story about the Middle Ages without fairy tale myths: women weren't helpless shadows behind men.
