Why do people deliberately choose pleasures that destroy themselves? This episode's theme is shopping addiction, staying up late, overspending, and behaviors that we know we should stop but can't. Usagi Nakamura, Fumie Otawa, and Nikuyo Nikunokoji discuss the "signs of the mind's limits" hidden behind seemingly destructive pleasures. Behaviors that appear to be mere wastefulness or sloppiness might be ways for the person to maintain their self-esteem. Staying up late looking at your smartphone, buying unnecessary things, postponing sleep—these might hide unspoken stresses or small escape routes to somehow survive the day. Usagi Nakamura says of her own shopping addiction, "It was a destructive act, but if I hadn't done it, I might have died." Shie Otawa views addiction and self-harming behavior not merely as "indulgence" or "abnormality," but as coping mechanisms, survival strategies. In the second half, she addresses a consultation about a mother's shopping addiction. Cardboard boxes pile up in the family home, a daughter wants to stop her mother, but she can't. How far should a family go? Do they want to help their mother, or do they simply want to change a reality they don't want to see? Is addiction truly "evil"? Is wasteful spending simply pointless? Why do people find salvation in ruin? This series explores shopping addiction, family, aging, loneliness, and the pleasure of survival. ▼Series Overview "Nikuyo's Money Labyrinth" is a talk series in which Nikuyo Nikunokoji, along with a variety of guests, explores the labyrinth of "money" that one can easily get lost in. You might just find some hints to help you escape your financial worries! ▼Cast Profile Fumie Otawa Board-certified Internal Medicine Specialist / Physician at the Ministry of Justice's Correctional Bureau.
