That's about as loud as a passing truck, for example, which is pretty damn loud. No wonder you can't sleep! Not surprisingly, men snore more often than women—but women can also snore very loudly. How does snoring occur? When we sleep, almost all of our muscles relax. This also applies to the mouth and throat, especially during the deep sleep phase. And that's essentially the problem. When the tissue is slack, it loses the shape it has when taut. This causes the throat opening, through which air flows in and out of the trachea, to become smaller. For example, the tongue can fold backward, or folds of skin in the throat can narrow the passage. However, which part of the tissue is ultimately responsible for the sawing noise varies from person to person. The noise often originates in the soft palate. In principle, snoring sounds can originate anywhere in the throat. Rarely, however, they also occur in the larynx region. Risk factors for excessively loud and frequent snoring: Men are generally affected much more often, and the risk increases with age. Snoring can also be caused by a deviated nasal septum, for example, if it obstructs nasal breathing. Enlargement of the soft palate tissue can also play a role. Of course, these are all factors that we cannot influence. Important risk factors that we can influence ourselves are: 1) Smoking, 2) Obesity, an often underestimated factor in snoring, and 3) Drinking alcohol, especially before going to bed. 5 Tips to Stop Snoring "How can I finally silence the sawmill?" My 5 tips: 1. Don't drink alcohol about 3-4 hours before going to bed. It relaxes the muscles, which can promote snoring. 2. If you are overweight, you should consider losing some weight. The excess fat can also accumulate in the throat and narrow the airways. 3. Try not to sleep on your back. If you sleep on your back out of habit, at least test a few times to see if you can sleep on your side. 4. Stop smoking or reduce your consumption. Smoking can irritate the mucous membranes, which can cause them to swell, which can impede breathing. 5. Probably the most important tip for you in general, not just when it comes to snoring: Pay attention to your sleep hygiene.
