Jangadeiros: The Legendary Raft Sailors of Brazil's Nordeste | SLICE | FULL DOCUMENTARY
Along the wind-swept northeastern coast of Brazil, a community has built its identity around a unique vessel: the jangada. This small wooden raft, just five meters long, defies the odds, venturing over 50 kilometers offshore to brave massive waves. These fishermen’s tales of multi-week sea voyages still shape the collective imagination of Brazil's Nordeste region. The jangadeiros are more than fishermen—they are also fierce competitors, showcasing their navigation skills in thrilling regattas that crown the best sailors in the area. Among them is 21-year-old Luis, a seasoned mariner from the pristine beach of Canto Verde, one of the last untouched stretches of Brazil's coastline. Since childhood, he has joined his father aboard their jangada, mastering the art of seafaring. But Luis dreams of earning the title of mestre—the highest honor for a jangadeiro sailor. This documentary captures the raw beauty of life at sea and the resilience of the jangadeiros. It follows Luis’s journey, his struggles, and his aspirations, while showcasing the jangada’s enduring legacy and the traditions of a community deeply connected to the ocean.
