In college, he wrestled for perhaps the greatest wrestling coach of all time, Dan Gable, at Iowa, where he was a two-time Big Ten champion and a two-time NCAA All-American. As a coach at Ohio State, he’s won numerous national coach of the year honors, has coached more than 75 All-Americans, and led the Buckeyes to a national championship in 2015. We filmed this in his office in Columbus, OH, after spending the morning watching some of his championship wrestlers practice. It was one of the coolest days I’ve had in a long time. WHO AM I? I’m Ryan Hawk, a writer, podcaster, advisor, and teacher. My favorite thing to do is have a deep, long-form conversation with a thoughtful person. Fortunately, I get to do that often on my podcast, The Learning Leader Show. I created The Learning Leader Show in 2015 as a way to follow my curiosity about leadership and excellence with great rigor. It has since been listened to by millions of people in more than 150 countries. 00:00 Episode Trailer 01:22 The Iowa Wrestling Experience 01:56 Overcoming Adversity and Finding Strength 04:14 Lessons from Legendary Coach Dan Gable 19:42 The Path to Coaching at Ohio State 24:12 Faith and Family: Coping with Tragedy 34:33 Chosen Suffering: A Philosophy of Life 38:16 The Essence of Effort and Love in Elite Performance 40:21 The Importance of Self-Assessment and Coachability 41:23 Balancing Hardness and Compassion in Coaching 42:27 The Unique Challenges of Wrestling Coaches 46:49 Leadership Traits and Building a Strong Team 54:59 Overcoming Personal Adversity and Depression 01:06:56 Advice for Young Graduates and Building a Strong Core
