Trams & Buses, Cars & Trucks (Wirral Transport Museum & Heritage Tramway)

On the 1st October 2017, the Wirral Transport Museum & Heritage Tramway hosted their annual Bus & Tram Show, this year Celebrating thier 20th Anniversary Show. The Wirral Transport Museum & Heritage Tramway, Set up by the Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society, have been running heritage trams in Birkenhead since the early 1990s. The tramway runs from outside the Woodside Ferry Terminal, along Shore Road with a passing loop and tram stop just outside the Pacific Road Arts Centre. From there it runs alongside the Wirral Metropolitan College Twelve Quays Campus, then swings round to cross over the A554, before arriving at the terminus at Wirral Transport Museum at Taylor Street. The Museum houses a superb collection of heritage Trams and Buses from the Wirral, Merseyside and surrounding areas. During the Bus & Tram Show, there was plenty of things going at each of the tram stops: A classic car display at Woodside Ferry. Heritage Bus display at Pacific Road, with free bus rides to New Brighton via Seacombe Ferry, plus free bus excursions to multiple locatons around the Wirral. A wide range of trade stands inside the Transport Museum. The event produced an excellent turn out of different vehicles from across the UK, with 41 buses, 31 cars, 12 commercial vehicles and 3 motorbikes entred for the event, as well as 22 late entries. On the tramway itself, 4 trams covered the service. These being: Wallasey No.78 of 1922 Liverpool No.245 of 1936 Hong Kong No.69 & No.70 of 1992 Trams on static display were: Lisbon No.730 of 1934 at Pacific road Liverpool No.762 of 1931 outside the Transport Museum Warrington No.28 of 1902 inside the Museum undergoing restoration The only tram car not in attendance at the event was Birkenhead No.20, currently on hire to Blackpool Transport to use for heritage purposes in their tramway system. This was the first time I had been to this event and I found it to be really enjoyable. I was impressed by the size of the event, considering it was a free entry event to the public, the only charge being for the tram rides, which at £2 return or £5 all day for adults is fantastic value. The event was well attended by the public almost every tram was packed. Not only that, the staff were all fiendly and clearly enjoying themselves as well, making for a brilliant atmosphere all day, despite the cloudy weather. I congratulate the Wirral Transport Museum & Heritage Tramway for putting on such a fantastic event and hoped it carries on for years to come.
