RPM check of a Detroit Diesel 4-53T
Apologies to anyone who had commented on this video early on, as all views and comments were lost quite a while back. :-( Anyway, with a makeshift cooling system attached, the freshly rebuilt Detroit is checked for idle (~500), intermediate (1837), and max (2849) governed speeds. I was using a reflective mark on the balance shaft pulley for the handheld tach. Being 2 cycle, everything turns crankshaft speed, including the camshaft for the exhaust valves (intake is done through ports in the cylinder sleeves). Also, I was chasing a couple of minor oil leaks which were easily fixed after this video was taken. Generally, she's ready to install into the Dodge, now.
