Dermott has been in Portugal for less than three months. Last Friday, he and his partner were having a coffee at a local café when their landlord spotted them and came over to check everything was okay with the apartment. The landlord speaks almost no English. Dermott is still a beginner. And yet, the two of them ended up in a 25-minute conversation about heart surgery. Valve replacements. Anticoagulant medication. A brilliant but temperamental cardiologist in Coimbra. Not exactly beginner small talk. But Dermott is no ordinary beginner. He has been so dedicated to working through our curriculum and showing up to our live sessions that he has made incredible progress in a very short space of time. While his Portuguese is of course not perfect yet, he is finally finding it easier to understand and communicate than ever. In a session a few weeks ago, he said: "Language is a means to making connections. And it was the making of the connection that was so satisfying. The language is just the means to do it." That's it. That's the reason I teach. Most people spend years waiting until their Portuguese is good enough to connect with locals. My students understand that armed with the basics and fantastic pronunciation, they can start making friends and living Portugal at its best as soon as they land.
