Woodstown Central 9: Springtime Steam in Salem County | Easter Trains 2025 [4K]
In celebration of Easter, America's newest tourist railroad, the Woodstown Central offered steam powered excursions. Heading south to Salem, the railroad's beloved steam locomotive, 9 hauled excursions to the newly constructed picnic grove in Mannington. Despite the dreary weather, the 9 delivered an impressive performance, making for an enjoyable visit to this growing operation. The Woodstown Central Railroad began excursions a mere two years ago, following SMS Rail Lines' purchase of the Salem Branch. Following a lengthy 14-year restoration of SMS 9, steam—and railroading itself—has triumphantly returned, with trains once again running between Woodstown and Salem. Woodstown Central Railroad 9 was constructed in 1942 by the American Locomotive Company and is classified as an 0-6-0 switcher type locomotive. She began her career in the United States Army as their 4023, hauling freight around Fort Dix, NJ and Fort Eustis NJ. After her tenure with the army, she would see work on Virginia Blue Ridge Railway as their #9, the number she wears today. In 1963, she hauled the railroad’s final steam-powered train before beginning a new chapter with the newly established New Hope Steam Railway (now New Hope Railroad). After years of intermittent operation, she was retired in 1981. SMS Rail Lines acquired her in 2009 with plans for restoration. In 2023, her restoration was completed, perfectly timed with the launch of the Woodstown Central, a new tourist railroad owned and operated by SMS Rail Lines. The whistle on 9 is to be a Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt 5 Chime.
