Access to the city of Lavras is via BR 265 or MG 335. The city is 240 km from the capital Belo Horizonte. In 1712, Francisco Bueno da Fonseca, his sons, a group of explorers and slaves left the village of Santana do Parnaíba, São Paulo. The initial objective of the expedition was to open routes to the Goiás mines in search of gold, but the nature of the region, climate, fertile lands and abundant water in the lands between the Capivari and Grande rivers, seduced Francisco Bueno da Fonseca to settle there in 1729, claiming the land grant for agricultural activities. The land grant requested by Francisco Bueno was confirmed by the governor of Minas Gerais, Martinho de Mendonça, in 1737. In 1751, the chapel of Sant'Ana was built on land belonging to Captain Luiz Gomes de Morais Salgado, and the settlement of Campos de Sant'Ana das Lavras do Funil was formed around it. The rapid development of the settlement of Campos de Sant’Ana das Lavras do Funil was due to the influence of the Bueno family, descendants of the famous Anhanguera, whose population in 1760 was already double that of the seat of Carrancas, justifying the transfer of the seat to the settlement. The settlement was the scene of the Liberal Revolution of 1842, which was won by the Liberals. Another factor that accelerated the growth of Lavras do Funil was the arrival of Italian, Portuguese, Lebanese, Spanish, and other immigrants who contributed to the cultural formation of the city. The installation of ports on the Rio Grande that connected Rio Vermelho to Piumhi and the Estrada de Ferro Oeste de Minas (West Minas Railway) boosted the development of the city of Lavras. On July 20, 1868, it was elevated to a municipality with the name Lavras do Funil. Today, in April 2024, the municipality of Lavras has a population approaching 105,000 inhabitants, with a territorial area of 564.495 km², at an altitude of 919m, and is bathed by the Água Limpa and Vermelho streams, which belong to the Grande River basin. The municipalities that border the municipality of Lavras are: Ijaci, Itumirim, Ingaí, Carmo da Cachoeira, Nepomuceno, Perdões, and Ribeirão Vermelho. The economy of the municipality of Lavras is based on industry, commerce, agriculture, and the provision of services. The industry is booming in the metallurgical, food, and textile sectors, among others, thanks to its proximity to major consumer centers such as Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro, and the ease of transporting production via highways like BR 381. In commerce, Lavras is an active and well-diversified regional hub with shopping malls, hypermarkets, restaurants, and lodging. In agriculture, coffee and milk are the main products, but the production of grains, fruits, vegetables, meats, and eggs is also significant. In tourism, Lavras is part of the Vale Verde and Quedas D'Água circuit, and the most visited spots in the municipality are: Ipês Waterfall, Faria Waterfall, Funil Community, Quedas do Rio Bonito Ecological Park, Serra da Bocaina, Jardim Campestre, Nossa Senhora do Rosário Church, Sant'Ana Parish Church, Bi Moreira Museum, Natural History Museum, Railway Stations, Dr. Augusto Silva Square, House of Culture, among others. It is impossible to talk about Lavras without emphasizing ESAL (Escola Superior de Agricultura de Lavras), founded in 1908, now UFLA (Universidade Federal de Lavras), a public, federal higher education institution, an autonomous entity linked to the Ministry of Education, headquartered in Lavras. UFLA has one of the best quality indexes in Brazil among public and private universities evaluated by the MEC (Ministry of Education). Lavras' calendar of events is extensive in the areas of culture, exhibitions, popular festivals, and religious celebrations.
