The Worst Mine Disaster in American History Nobody Remembers

On December 6, 1907, both mines beneath Monongah, West Virginia detonated in the same instant. The official death toll was 362. The real number was almost certainly higher — and nobody can say exactly how much higher, because some of the men who went underground that morning were never in any record to begin with. This is the largest mining disaster in American history. Most Americans have never heard of it. Portions of this video contain edited or simulated visuals for illustrative purposes.
