Lagunas de Peñalara

An essential route for visiting one of the most ecologically valuable areas of the Sierra de Guadarrama, and undoubtedly a favorite spot for many mountain lovers to spend the day, even with the family, as it doesn't require a very high level of fitness. The route starts from the Cotos pass. It's best to arrive early, as the parking lot tends to fill up and the natural park has a maximum capacity of 1,000 visitors. From the parking lot, head towards the Mirador de la Gitana viewpoint. A few meters ahead, take the path to the right that leads to the Laguna Grande de Peñalara. Before reaching the Chozo del Vigilante (Watchman's Hut), take the path to the right, and after a steep climb, you'll reach the Mirador de Javier viewpoint. From there, following the slopes of Peñalara, you'll reach the area known as Las Charcas or Lagunillas. Continuing along the path, you'll arrive at the Laguna de los Claveles (Carnation Lagoon) and finally at the Laguna de los Pájaros (Bird Lagoon) at an altitude of 2,170 meters. Spare shoelaces and/or a rope (cord or paracord). A flashlight. Check that the batteries are charged and carry spare batteries in your backpack. Sunscreen. A thermal blanket. An external battery or power bank. A small first-aid kit. A lightweight raincoat or windbreaker.
