“Cromwell, Protector of the Realm” is a Ulster Irish song about Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland. It presents him as a disciplined, God fearing leader who saved Ireland from the Irish confederates led by Felim O'Neil. The song makes multiple references to the Portadown massacre in which roughly 100 Protestant settlers were forced off a bridge and into the river Bann, and those who tired to escape were shot. The song also presents the seige of Drogheda as them taking revenge, a seige that has had much debate on whether the killings that followed it were just or not.
