Can Independents benefit from becoming a political party?

Sparked by the proposal to register 'Community Strong Australia' as a new political party of community Independents in Australia, this video addresses three questions. First, why did they choose a name which reminds people of grant-rorting schemes, such as the Stronger Communities program? Second, can you have a political party in Australia that is comprised, essentially, of Independents who have a 'free vote' on all matters other than confidence and supply? The video explores the legal status of a party and what conditions need to be met to constitute one. Third, will becoming a political party entitle it to greater benefits under the new campaign finance laws that commence on 1 January 2027? The video discusses the complicated interaction between donations caps, expenditure caps and the use of federal accounts, and explains why it may be difficult for Community Strong Australia to get the same advantages as major parties from the system.
