The general practitioner is a central figure in our healthcare system. But the profession is going through a profound crisis and no longer inspires dreams. These general practitioners, long known as family doctors, number just under 80,000 in France. While the number of doctors practicing in private offices has decreased over the past 10 years, it is primarily their distribution across the country that is worrying. In rural areas, but also in large cities, general practitioners are sorely lacking. Because of this shortage, 11% of patients do not have a primary care physician. If young doctors are so reluctant to set up practice in these medical deserts, it's also because they don't want to repeat the mistakes of their predecessors. Behind the image of the family doctor who was available day and night lies a much darker reality. Nearly half of general practitioners are said to suffer from burnout. In a small village in northern France, Dr. Pierre Levisse, a general practitioner for 40 years, is beginning his last week of consultations before retiring. Lacking a successor, he leaves behind 2,500 patients without care. At 29, Camille Bac is not yet a doctor. A final-year medical student, she begins a six-month internship in a general practice near Lyon. An internship that will change her career plans. In Montceau-les-Mines, Dr. Dominique Bontoux chose salaried employment after a burnout brought an end to 20 years of private practice. She works in a health center funded by the department and sees patients every day who suffer from a critical lack of care in this medical desert. Finally, Benoît Gombert, 40, practices medicine with the SOS Médecins association in St-Malo. Once night falls, he is the last resort before the emergency room. When his colleagues close their offices, he puts on his white coat, with a sense of purpose. The documentary directed by Céline Martel is followed by a live discussion moderated by Marina Carrère-d’Encausse.
