Right, they immediately pull out a smoke machine or spray carburetor cleaner to find the air leak. But in a huge number of cases, they waste time and fix what's working properly. In this video, I'll clearly demonstrate the real cause-and-effect relationships in engine operation using examples and live diagnostic graphs. You'll learn why even a small air leak won't cause intake pressure to increase. The engine control unit (ECU) is a smart system. First, it will try to compensate for the excess air by closing the idle air control valve (IAC) or closing the electronic throttle valve. Only when the IAC valve reaches zero and the ECU begins adjusting the ignition timing (IAT) will the other parameters change. In this episode: Why high intake manifold pressure is most often a hardware issue (timing belt, valves, exhaust), not a leak. How the ECU masks an air leak at idle.
