Please note that this will only analyse the book. I will show clips from the movies as a visual aid, but for the purposes of Horror History, the books are canon. I'll be talking about the coping mechanisms that Stan uses to deal with the trauma encountered in the book due to his encounters with the monster Pennywise, the bullies associated with Henry Bowers and the other evils that reside in Derry. Psychologists have ways of classifying these behaviours as either adaptive coping mechanisms or maladaptive coping mechanisms, and I'll be explaining how each of them relate to Stan's experiences. I'll also analyse some of Stan's actions and look at how they foreshadow his future, and how his upbringing made him the character he is.
