A new social studies teacher, Eugene, gives his class an assignment: think of an idea to change the world and put it into action. One student, Trevor, creates the "Pay It Forward" plan: he will help three people, and in return, they must each help three new people. The film follows his attempts to help a homeless man , his struggling single mother Arlene , and his bullied friend Adam.
