The former Buderus Heiztechnik GmbH operates under the name Bosch-Thermotechnik GmbH and remains part of Robert Bosch GmbH. The "Buderus" brand is retained for products in the heating and plumbing sectors. A condensing boiler is a hot water boiler that utilizes almost the full theoretical energy content (calorific value, upper heating value) of the fuel used, instead of only the lower (lower, traditionally practical) heating value like older boilers. This is achieved by cooling the water vapor produced from the combustion of hydrocarbons (such as oil and gas, but not pure coal) as much as possible and collecting it as liquid condensate instead of escaping directly through the chimney as hot steam, which can be seen as a cloud on cold days. Condensing boilers also utilize the condensation enthalpy (also called latent heat, which is thermodynamically incorrect) to provide heat. One could also say that water is no longer unnecessarily boiled out of the chimney. According to the German Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV), condensing boilers generate 11% more usable heat with natural gas and 6% with heating oil, thus achieving apparent efficiencies of over 100% compared to older systems.
