Types of Azoospermia -Non-obstructive azoospermia -Obstructive azoospermia Male reproductive system Before understanding what causes of this obstruction lets understand the male reproductive system 1. Testes, commonly known as testicles, is the part of the male reproductive organ where sperms are produced. 2. Later these sperms travel via a duct or a pipeline called the vas deference and are temporarily stored in seminal vesicles. 3. In the seminal vesicles, certain nutrition and fluids are added to these sperms. 4. At the time of intercourse, the sperms are ejaculated through ejaculatory ducts from the penis and it gets out as the seminal fluid. In the case of obstructive azoospermia, there is a blockage in the epididymis or vas deference or elsewhere along the reproductive tract. Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA): there is no blockage in the reproductive tract but there is some abnormality in the testes which causes a reduction in sperm production. Causes of Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) 1. Congenital Issues with testes. i.e. Chryptorchidism, Retractile Testes 2. Injury to the testes 3. Viral Infections in Childhood 4. Endocrinological problems related to the brain and secretion of hormones in the body. 5. Gonadotoxic therapy. i.e, therapies that affect the gonadotropin hormones in the body. Obstructive Azoospermia: The testes are normal but the sperm produced somehow can not come out due to the blockage or absence of the duct. This is obstructive azoospermia. Causes of Obstructive Azoospermia 1. The obstruction could be because of genital infections that block the vas deference. 2. Blockage of ejaculatory ducts. 3. In some rare cases, there can congenital absence of this duct which is no as Congenital Bilateral Absence Of Vas Deference.
