Cyber Scam in Odisha: ₹134 Crore Lost in Just 4 Months, Crime Branch Reveals

In just the last four months, cyber fraudsters have allegedly cheated people of over ₹134 crore through thousands of online scams. According to official reports, more than 16,000 cybercrime cases have been registered during this period alone. Out of the total amount lost, only a small portion has been recovered or held, while victims continue to struggle to get their money back. In comparison, last year saw over 49,000 cyber fraud cases in Odisha, with losses exceeding ₹432 crore, highlighting the growing threat of digital scams. In a positive development, a retired professor from Bhubaneswar successfully recovered ₹1.1 crore after being a victim of a “digital arrest” scam. After filing a complaint on helpline 1930, swift action by the cyber crime team helped freeze and return part of the stolen amount. Authorities are urging citizens to remain cautious, especially against fake calls, digital arrest threats, and online investment frauds.
