Each summer, from April to September, hairtail, which follows the Kuroshio Current from the waters south of Jeju Island, has long been a friend and part of the lives of the people of Geomundo. So, why is hairtail so beloved on Geomundo, a place renowned for its diverse seafood? In Episode 32, we delve into the hidden story of hairtail, a staple fish on every Korean table, and its strong bond with the residents of Geomundo Island. ■ Hairtail, a Summer Guest on Geomundo Island Hongguk-eohwa (紅國漁火). This term describes the boats that fish in the waters off Geomundo Island, lit up all night long. Boats depart for the open sea around 4 p.m. to catch hairtail, returning at 7 a.m. the next morning. Catching hairtail, a nocturnal fish, requires lighting all night long and careful fishing to avoid damaging their silvery scales. Why is the hairtail we encountered on Geomundo Island so special? Hairtail feeds profusely to replenish their energy after spawning. We follow the joys and sorrows of the fishermen who catch them. ■ Hairtail, a Key to Geomundo's Dining Table? "I can't go, I can't go. I can't get married, leaving behind the belly of the cutlassfish, as thick as brass leaves." "I can't forget the little cutlassfish, the largest of the islands, and I can't leave the island." Just as the old saying goes, "The taste of cutlassfish belly makes people hesitate to marry on the mainland," cutlassfish, from belly to tail, was a nutritious food for the residents of Geomundo, helping them beat the heat and relieve the fatigue of hard work. So, what are the special cutlassfish dishes you can only find on Geomundo Island during the summer? From cutlassfish hangakgu soup, unique to Geomundo, to fried cutlassfish bones, we introduce the diverse cutlassfish dishes that have graced the tables of Geomundo residents. ■ The Connection Between Geomundo and Cutlassfish Geomundo, surrounded by three islands like a folding screen, forms a natural harbor. This place was truly a golden fishing ground, renowned for its abundant catches of cutlassfish, tuna, and mackerel. But why did the residents of Geomundo Island, where other high-quality fish were abundant, particularly enjoy eating hairtail? And how could they, when they could only catch hairtail from summer to fall, be able to enjoy it year-round? Hairtail, once so common that it wasn't considered a precious fish.
