Whitechapel, 1887 — twenty-two-year-old Miriam Angel, a Polish-Jewish immigrant six months pregnant with her first child, was found dead in her locked room at 16 Batty Street on the morning of the 28th of June, nitric acid poured down her throat, her right eye blackened by violent blows. Hidden beneath her bed lay Israel Lipski, a twenty-two-year-old stick-maker from the attic above, unconscious with acid burns on his own mouth. The door was locked from the inside. Lipski claimed two workers had attacked them both; the prosecution said he acted alone. The Old Bailey jury convicted him in eight minutes. A national campaign for reprieve reached Queen Victoria herself, but on the eve of his hanging Lipski confessed to Rabbi Simeon Singer — speaking through an interpreter, in a prison cell, with no hope of reprieve. He was hanged at Newgate on the 22nd of August 1887, aged twenty-two. Thirteen months later, one street away, Jack the Ripper's witness heard the word "Lipski" shouted as an anti-Semitic slur. Whether he was guilty remains unknown.
