But the original factory radio or multimedia system doesn't always (or almost never) meet the audio quality standards required by the customer, forcing the installation of another universal model, which may be from a well-established brand like Pioneer, JVC, Kenwood, Alpine, among others, or even a common "cheap" one. Even if the audio quality of the original device is mediocre, the customer is still somewhat reluctant to change devices because they like the convenience of the car's steering wheel audio controls. There is a solution for this, and it's not that expensive. The product we're going to talk about today is the steering wheel interface from Faaftech, a company specializing in the manufacture of electronic components for vehicle comfort. First, let's understand a little better how the steering wheel control system works. The controls on the steering wheel have some buttons that perform the most basic audio control functions. Each button sends a resistive signal to the radio, which interprets this resistance and executes the command on the radio. However, the whole issue is that each steering wheel sends a different signal to the radio, and this makes it impossible to manufacture radios with universal compatibility for the steering wheels of all cars. This is where the use of a steering wheel control interface becomes necessary. One brand that I have used for many years and am sure works well is Faaftech, so I can recommend it with conviction. Before buying the steering wheel interface, it will be necessary to check the exact model of the radio and the year and model of the car to know which interface will be compatible. All cars have this communication done through some wires that go through the original wiring harness from the turn signal switch to the radio compartment. In the case of installing a universal multimedia system, it will be necessary to identify these wires and connect them to the head unit. For this, the manual that comes with the interface has the exact information on the colors and positions of the wires, both in the head unit and in the car's wiring harness, so that the installation can be done accurately. The interface can communicate with the radio in three ways: a P2 cable in the WR input, individual connecting wires, or an infrared LED transmitter that simulates the original control of the device. Both methods work very well. After the physical installation, it is necessary to configure in the interface head unit which radio device is being used and also in which car it is being used. This is done through small DIP-style selector switches. It will also be necessary to configure the multimedia system, enabling the steering wheel control function. If the communication with the radio is done via infrared, then it will be necessary to individually configure each button by copying the signal from the original button on the control and recording it on the steering wheel control. After these procedures, the steering wheel controls will function normally, and the universal multimedia system will be fully compatible with the car's original controls.
