From Inshore moments to Offshore battles - if it's got fins, we've got the Live Action! There's nothing quite like returning to my hometown jetty at the Oceanside Harbor in North County San Diego. I hadn't fished this spot in what felt like months, so I couldn't wait to see how the middle of spring bite would be. To make the most of the day, I arrived well before sunrise, giving me the chance to soak in the incredible first light as the sky lit up over the Pacific. Those quiet moments before dawn are one of the biggest reasons I love fishing Southern California. The familiar rocks of my hometown jetty always make for an easy trek, and every visit brings back memories from a lifetime of fishing these waters. With the sound of waves rolling in, seabirds overhead, and surfers cheering each other on in the distance, it's hard to imagine a better place to spend a morning. The action started quickly! I landed two Yellowfin Croakers on live lugworms before I ran out of bait. After switching over to fresh shrimp, the bite stayed hot, producing a beautiful Opaleye followed by the biggest surprise of the day—a California Spiny Lobster! You truly never know what might grab your bait when fishing a Southern California jetty. Once the bait thieves started picking apart my shrimp, it was time for another adjustment. I switched over to fresh mussel, and it paid off immediately with two bright orange Garibaldi on back-to-back casts! While Garibaldi are California's vibrant state marine fish and were carefully released, they always put a smile on my face with their incredible color. By the end of the session, I had landed 6 fish and 1 California Spiny Lobster, making for an unforgettable day of multi-species shore fishing. The trip wrapped up after I snagged the rocks and broke off my rig—perfect timing, because the incoming tide was beginning to crash against the jetty. Had I stayed another hour, the waves would've been washing right over the rocks. Sometimes the ocean lets you know it's time to call it a day. This place will always be special to me. Oceanside is my hometown, and I've been lucky enough to call it home my entire life. Every trip out here reminds me why I fell in love with fishing in the first place. The beautiful coastline, the salty ocean breeze, the surfers, the wildlife, and the chance that your next cast could bring in something completely unexpected—it never gets old.
