Tierra, territorio y autonomía: demandas históricas de la marcha indígena
The Marcelo Quiroga Santa Cruz Chair presents the forum “Land, Territory, and Autonomy: Historical Demands of the Indigenous March,” which will take place this Wednesday, October 6, at 7:00 p.m. The forum will feature Enrique Ormachea, a researcher at the Center for Labor and Agrarian Development Studies (CEDLA), and Ruth Alipaz Cuqui, an Indigenous leader from the National Coordinating Body for the Defense of Indigenous, Native, and Peasant Territories and Protected Areas (CONTIOCAP). Speakers Enrique Ormachea: Land Dispossession and the Indigenous March Born in La Paz, he studied Sociology at the University of Paris VIII, France. He was the founder and executive director of the Center for Labor and Agrarian Development Studies (CEDLA). From CEDLA's earliest years, he conducted research on employment and urban and rural labor markets. Several of his studies focused on the challenges of wage labor in agriculture. Ruth Alipaz Cuqui: Indigenous Territories and the Plurinational State An Indigenous woman from the San José de Uchupiamonas Indigenous community in northern La Paz, she is a member of the Association of Communities of the Beni, Tuichi, and Quiquibey Rivers, a grassroots organization defending six Indigenous territories from the threat of the Chepete and El Bala hydroelectric dams in the Beni River basin. She is a leader of the National Coordinating Committee for the Defense of Indigenous, Native, and Peasant Territories and Protected Areas (CONTIOCAP). The Marcelo Quiroga Santa Cruz Open Chair is an initiative of activists, professors, and students from the Social Communication program at the Faculty of Social Sciences of UMSA (Universidad Mayor de San Andrés), inspired by the educational, research, and political work of the historic socialist leader, who focused his energies on understanding the root causes of Bolivia's impoverishment and its stunted economy in order to communicate this information simply to the Bolivian people.
