Continuing from last time, we'll be discussing gentle pruning techniques for deciduous trees in early summer. We've used the Japanese snowball viburnum (Viburnum plicatum) as an example. The principle is to avoid pruning the branch tips after cutting them back, as this will cause them to become dense and unruly. Japanese snowball viburnum grows easily because its branches grow in opposite directions. The key is to create sharp angles in the branching.
