Rolex invented the GMT Master in 1954, outfitting early models with a 4th hand and a bi-directional 24-hour bezel. The idea was that the wearer could keep local time set on the centrally-mounted hands and read home time against the bezel via the extra hand. Initially, the GMT hand did not operate independently of the other hands, only allowing the wearer to read up to two time zones at once. However, that all changed in the 1980s when the GMT Master II hit the market. The GMT hand became independent, allowing the wearer to read up to three time zones simultaneously. The star of today’s video, reference 116718, didn’t come to market until decades later, in the mid-2000s. It belonged to the first generation of 6-digit GMT’s, complete with a new and improved movement with a smoother hour hand, an anti-reflective Cyclops lens over the date, a Maxi dial with larger hour markers and Mercedes hands, and a new case and bracelet. This generation was also, notably, the first to feature what many Rolex enthusiasts refer to as the “Super Case.” It features larger, more squared-off crown guards and thicker lugs. Despite keeping the same 40mm diameter as its predecessors, the Super Case wears slightly larger and is, overall, more contemporary in design. Another notable upgrade made alongside the 6-digit generation was the bezel, which replaced aluminum with tougher and more lustrous Cerachrom -aka ceramic. This material is virtually fade and scratch-resistant and maintains a richer hue than aluminum. The 1167XX generation was recently discontinued to make way for the current 1267XX generation. Although nearly every Rolex watch is collectible simply because it’s associated with the prestigious and very exclusive Rolex brand, discontinued models are even more so. That’s why we were so excited to unbox this beauty, with its lustrous satin and polished 18 karat yellow gold finish and vibrant green dial. Read on or continue watching to learn more about the specifics of this discontinued Rolex GMT Master II 116718. ROLEX 116718 GREEN Enter reference 116718, the stunning yellow gold edition of the 6-digit GMT Master II. Introduced in 2005, it was the first reference in the 1167XX generation. It isn’t unusual for Rolex to unveil a new model in all-gold, and that appears to be what they did with ref. 116718 because the two-tone reference 116713 did not come to market until 2006, with the Oystersteel edition coming to market the year after that in 2007. Reference 116718 was introduced with a rich green Anniversary dial but later became available in all black. However, we find the dial in Rolex’s signature green hue particularly captivating and unique. It displays the time with yellow gold-trimmed hour markers and Mercedes hands. The date mechanism is always presented at the 3-hour marker beneath the Cyclops lens. Also present on the dial is stunning gold text to compliment the gold finish of the case. A black ceramic bezel surrounds the dial, featuring 24-hour graduations in gold to match the case and bracelet. NEW BRACELET AND CASE The Super Case is one of Rolex’s most impressive Oyster case designs to date. It features an improved Twinlock crown with two sealed zones and an engraved rehaut. Accompanying the case is the newer Oyster bracelet, complete with polished center links and a more solid clasp. The clasp itself boasts an innovative extension system. HOW TO READ EXTRA TIME ZONES To use the dual-time capabilities of the GMT Master II 116718, begin by setting the GMT hand to your secondary time zone. Then, adjust the 12-hour hand forwards or backward until it reads the correct local time. By doing this, the local time will be displayed by the 12-hour hand, while home time is presented on the bezel by the GMT hand. The GMT Master II can also technically display a third time zone via the bezel. To do this, simply rotate the bezel forwards or backward until it corresponds with the number of hours ahead or behind it is of the time zone displayed by the GMT hand. The third time zone will now be read via the GMT hand against the bezel.
