Why My Self Defense 9mm Load is 115 Grain JHP

Right out the box I will address the round that so many think should be the round of choice for 9mm EDC; 124 Grain Gold Dot Speer. Yes, I too used to be in that camp. Why did I move away from it? Because I used to work in the body armor industry and found that the larger, and or heavier in weight the handgun round was, the easier it was stopped by the armor panel. When you work in the armor industry you find yourself having to memorize ballistics charts. That only goes so far in giving you the knowledge needed to do the job effectively. What really teaches you is live armor shoots. I did several of those and found that one of the toughest rounds on body armor was 115 grain 9 mm. Please understand that what I'm talking about are "meat and potatoes" bullets. I'm not talking about any of the hybrid stuff out there, I'm just talking about your run-of-the-mill, easily accessible ammunition. The 9 mm round is a tough projectile to deal with and it is a round that is readily accessible and interchangeable from one handgun to the next. I have firsthand knowledge of what that round does to body armor and to meat, and it is astonishing the damage that the modern 9 mm can impart as it dumps its energy on target. The bullet never lies.
