In "Just a Little Different," Marlijn Weerdenburg follows six young adults with mild intellectual disabilities, for whom everyday life sometimes moves a little too fast. Yet, they're determined to learn as many skills as possible. They want to function as normally as possible in society. Each episode focuses on one of these young people's journey to greater independence, and in this episode, that person is Sanne. Sanne is 21, a down-to-earth Frisian woman, cheerful, enthusiastic, verbally adept, and not afraid of anything. She has a busy life: she works in a supermarket, is a great sailor, enjoys bowling, plays badminton, has several friends, and participates in the Nijmegen Four Days Marches every year with her grandfather. Yet, she's a little different, because she has a mild intellectual disability and ADD. She's easily distracted, every stimulus is worthwhile, and filtering things out is difficult. When grocery shopping, this leads to a basket full of things she hadn't planned on buying, and money slips through her fingers faster than intended. Sanne desperately wants to live on her own, but that's only possible if she can concentrate better and resist the temptation of buying things. She has to learn to come home with the right groceries, instead of all sorts of treats that aren't on the shopping list. Keeping track and managing money is something many young people with mild intellectual disabilities find difficult, but it's important if you want to live on your own.
